A charity can be formed as a charitable trust, a charitable association or a charitable company. St Peter’s Trust comes into that last category. It is a private company, established as a Company Limited by Guarantee and not having a Share Capital. The number of members is limited to fifty and admittance to membership of the Trust is by invitation of the managing Trustees. The Trust has been established for the purposes expressed in its Memorandum of Association, and the original subscribers to that Memorandum and any other people that the Managing Trustees admit to membership shall be Members of the Trust by written consent. The liability of Members is limited. A Managing Trustee need not be a Member of the Trust.

The Managing Trustees of St Peter’s Trust hold meetings quarterly and the Finance Committee also meets shortly before each Trustees’ meeting. The Annual General Meeting is held in the late autumn - see Attend Events page for details.

A grant round is usually held once a year, and the applications are assessed by a Medical Advisory Committee which has a membership largely composed of medical specialists not otherwise associated with the Trust. Opinions are also obtained from external referees who are experts in their specialist fields.

If a Trustee is connected in any way to a research application submitted to the MAC, that individual is excluded from the decisions on that project made on behalf of the Trust.
